When it comes to a memory foam mattress, you’d be forgiven in thinking that there are just a few standard sizes available – single, queen, king and super king. Nice and straightforward, right?
Well, no, not quite.
With the advent of bed frame manufactures from continental Europe and Scandinavia – including the very prominent Swedish IKEA company – firmly ensconcing themselves within the UK market, the emergence of a whole array of mattress sizes has meant that UK manufacturers and suppliers have had to broaden their horizons and bolster their stock.
In the UK, we’re actually an odd mix of mattress sizes based on imperial measurements, but we also offer metric equivalents too.
Confusingly, the older and a great many current Ikea bed frames actually conform to and accommodate continental or IKEA-only sizes… although the Swedish furniture giant has recently had a lightbulb moment and is slowly introducing UK sizes into their range too.
But if you’re one of the many hundreds of thousands of IKEA bed owners, or perhaps you’ve looked abroad for your bed frame of choice, then you’ll be looking to source a mattress that’s a perfect fit. Our advice? Measure once, measure twice and then measure once more just to make sure that you’ve got the correct mattress size. Don’t just rely on mattress names such as ‘single’, ‘twin’, ‘double’ or ‘king’, as this could mean different things depending on where the bed frame was designed and manufactured!
