Tips to Prolong the Life of Your Memory Mattress

If you’re thinking about purchasing a memory foam mattress, one of your considerations will probably be the ‘life’ of the mattress – just how long will it last? Your average good quality memory foam mattress should last you around 10 years as standard – that’s the same as any pocket sprung or open coil mattress. But to make your mattress last for between 10 and 15 years, and for it to stay as comfortable as possible, there are a few tips and tricks that you can employ. Here’s a couple of suggestions from our experienced My Memory Mattress sales team:

1. Regularly rotate your mattress – but don’t turn it!

This is a very important tip – with many memory foam mattresses, a firmer, denser foam is used as the base of the mattress to avoid that ‘cocooning’ sensation of falling into the mattress. It is for this reason that you should only ever rotate your memory mattress head to foot way, as turning it over will cause a few surprises whilst you wait for that gorgeously sublime relaxing feeling to kick in at bedtime, only to find it never happens because you’re sleeping on a firm foam base!

2. Use a memory foam mattress protector or cover

Having an additional breathable mattress protector or fitted mattress cover on your memory foam will help to prolong the life of your mattress by providing a protective barrier against stains and damage, such as cat claws! A washable cover will also make your hypoallergenic memory mattress that much more hygienic. Remember, with many of our standard memory foam mattresses, we provide a FREE Coolmax memory mattress cover, which draws moisture away from you and the mattress and encourages rapid evaporation, helping to keep you cool and comfortable during those long hot summer nights.

Select the correct firmness for your weight!

As ever, prevention is the cure, so if you or your partner are that little bit on the heavy side, to help to prolong the life of your memory mattress you should opt for a slightly firmer density of memory foam to discourage permanent ‘sinking’ after a period of using the bed.
